Wafula Chebukati’s last words: Son paints a picture of fearless yet loving father

He said the image of his father in a Spanish bullfighting hat embodied the strong-willed and fearless Chebukati the public knew.

Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati's son, Emmanuel Chebukati, shared emotional details of his father's final moments before his passing.

Speaking during the burial service at their home in Sabatia-Kiminini Constituency on Saturday, Emmanuel described his father as a courageous and cheerful man. He recounted their last interaction, painting a vivid picture of the moment he shared with him after returning from a conference in Spain.

Emmanuel had brought back an authentic Spanish bullfighting hat and placed it on his father’s head.

"I gave him the hat, and I put it on top of his head, and he immediately said to me, 'I feel like a bullfighter already,' and then he went on to say, 'Nobody can mess with me when I am in my bullfighting hat,'" Emmanuel told mourners.

He said the image of his father in the hat embodied the strong-willed and fearless Chebukati the public knew.

However, he described a different side of him within the family — one of warmth, love and devotion.

"But through my eyes and the eyes of the family members seated here, you will see him as simply the best father, husband and brother you'll ever have. It is said that if you think Chebukati is tough and doesn't smile, then you don't know Chebukati," Emmanuel said.

His siblings, Jonathan and Rachel, joined in eulogising their father, describing him as a guiding force in their lives and promising to uphold the values he instilled in them.

Chebukati passed away on February 20, 2025, after battling brain cancer.

As part of the burial arrangements, the government put in place strict measures to maintain order during the ceremony.

Security officers were on high alert to prevent any disturbances, and political activities, including gatherings and party regalia, were strictly prohibited to ensure a peaceful send-off.
